Kai Chovanak - Story and Research

I could not decide which story I liked best so I did research for them all.

In Japan there lived a depressed salary-woman. She attempted to commit suicide but failed. While she was recovering she thought back to her attempt wondering why it didn't work. In the hospital bed she lay, she slowly reached for the tube leading into her artery. She contemplated filling her veins with air. As she was about to she remembered a time in her childhood when things were simple. She read manga and had wanted to be a mangaka but gave up because her parents looked down upon it. She remembered drawing in the heat of the summer in her little town. She had lived in the valley of two mountains and often sat near the train station and drew. She drew the scenery, the train and most often she drew the salary men and women getting on and off the train. The salary woman's eyes filled with tears as she let go of the tube. She grabbed the notepad and pen off the stand near her bed and began to draw.

In a fantasy world “angels” live on sky islands above humans. Humans are jealous of “angels” because of their superior mobility and their peaceful nature. Humans also have a large market for their wings. Humans hunters often go after an angel if one is spotted and remove its wings (similar to a shark). Because of this “angels” are forbidden to leave the islands. Although this rule is in place one “angel” does leave the island out of curiosity and loses their wings. Because of this they cannot return to the islands and are disowned by the “angels”. The “angel” ponders and after much struggle creates a pair of mechanical wings, ascending to the islands again leaving humanity behind.

In Nagoya Japan, a girl descends from the heavens. After beginning her second life to atone for her
sins in her past life she is reincarnated as an angel with black wings. Like those in a similar situation
to her she is driven out of the town she descended into having to live with those of her kind in the
ruins of a hospital. The hospital is located in the fields that surround the town near the train. Because
she is curious she hides her wings by wrapping them tightly in gauze, boards the train and goes to
the shopping district Osu. It is filled with stands selling fish, takoyaki and other street foods. They
also sell clothing and electronics. While in a clothing store she bumps into a boy about her age
knocking all of his items on the ground. She quickly begins picking them up apologizing. “Don't
worry” the boy says. “Are you busy right now?” he asks. “No” says the girl. “Would you like to go get
food with me?” the boy asks. She agrees and they go to a nearby takoyaki stand and purchase two
sticks of takoyaki. After eating and talking the day away she tells him she needs to leave. He asks
here where she lives and offers to take her home but she says he can't. He decides to not push the
issue but asks if she would like to meet later that week. Excited she says yes. The two meet often
for many months drawing some questions from the other blackwings. One day the boy buys her a
dress from the same clothing store they bumped into each other in and asks her to try it on. The
dress has an open back. She says no but he insists. Under the pressure she flees and right before
the boy makes chase he sees a black feather floating down to the ground. He understands what this
means. At the abandoned hospital the girl is depressed. The next day she won't leave her room and
the other blackwings are confused. She had gone out like clockwork before. There was a knock on
the door, the handle turned, expecting a lecture from another blackwing she pulled her sheets over
her head. The sheets slowly lifted and the boy said “I am here”. The girl struggled with her emotions
for a second. Was she angry? Glad? It doesn't matter. The girls wings turned white and fell off as
she hugged him, wearing the dress he had given her.
